Latest design revealed for new downtown arena

The latest design for the new downtown Toledo arena was unveiled this morning at Fifth Third Field by the Lucas County commissioners and others involved with the project.

While the arena’s final design is not yet complete, the commissioners said the glass, brick, and concrete structure shown on display cards this morning was an accurate portrayal of where the project is headed.

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken, known as the lead commissioner for the arena project, said the decision to build the arena largely out of glass, brick, and concrete rather than steel will help keep the project local.

Commissioner Ben Konop spoke of a concerted effort by the project’s design team to create public gathering spots around the arena and to ensure the building meshes with the architecture of other downtown buildings.

The design team includes architectural firms HNTB, of Kansas City, and The Collaborative, a local firm.

Tina Skeldon Wozniak, president of the Lucas County commissioners, heralded the design team’s commitment to constructing a "green" or environmentally friendly arena. Ms. Wozniak said this goal will be accomplished through passive solar features, high-efficiency light and plumbing fixtures, and a "cool roof" that will help reduce summer cooling costs, among other methods.

The commissioners also announced the arena’s new Web site, www.lucascountyarena.com, that will feature two live Web cams monitoring construction.
